I'm a huge fan of Hawksmoor and would love to visit Castle Howard, do you think it's worth going in the off-season or should I wait until summer when (I would guess) the grounds look better and things are in bloom?

The gardens, parterres mainly, are not as significant as the broader landscape which is sublime in all seasons. Access to the Mausoleum was a little difficult and had to be arranged in advance. It is worth visiting Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal also when in Yorkshire.
