Was told by a lady doing the altar flowers at St Bertoline's, back in the mid-60s (I was a semi-regular at the White Lion, petrol prices permitting, in my student days) that she had recently scrubbed Boehm's monument to Lady Houghton with an abrasive sink-cleaning product (forget now, which). She was very proud of the resulting shining white and rather grainy surface on the marble!
